Cacao: Food for the Shift

Chocolate is chocolate, right?

Not when it is ceremonial grade cacao. Cacao beans come in three main varieties… Criollo, Forastero & Trinitario. Criollo is the wild and most ancient variety native to Central America and a few northern tier South American countries such as Peru, Ecuador & Brazil. It is the most highly prized cacao bean, as Criollo varieties are rare and therefore expensive. It also has a spiritual potency. Criollo beans make up less than 1% of the world’s production as crop yields from Criollo trees are low. This particular cacao comes from wild Criollo trees in Guatemala.

Cacao has been dubbed ‘The Food for the Shift’.

An Indigenous myth tells us that whenever the balance between humans and nature becomes threatened, cacao comes from the rainforest to open people’s hearts and return us all to harmony.

Ceremonial grade cacao is an important, powerful, and previously overlooked teacher, facilitator, and medicine-plant. For those of you who already have a deep connection with chocolate, here we share what can be a very different dimension to that connection – a deeply spiritual or shamanic one. Ceremonial Cacao partners with you on your journey… experience chocolate as the magical partner it is! The Cacao Spirit “returns” – from a long history with Indigenous peoples.

Cacao is also said to be a superfood.

Superfoods are nutritionally dense and diverse natural foods (not supplements) that offer great healing potential to the body. Cacao is rich in magnesium, iron, zinc, calcium, chromium, manganese, sulphur, copper and phosphorous. Many of these essential and trace minerals are difficult to get these days, even with a balanced diet as our soils are mineral depleted. Cacao is one of the few foods in the world that helps our brain to produce more feel good chemicals. It has therapeutic levels of brain chemicals that positively affect mood, memory, appetite, pain perception, feelings of well-being, rejuvenation, attraction and euphoria.

Check out all the neurotransmitters present in cacao: such as Anandamide (known as the “bliss chemical”),  Serotonin: (the primary neurotransmitter in the human body and increased by cacao, acts as an anti-depressant, reduces PMS, promotes a sense of well-being, AND it enhances your libido), Endorphins  (which produce a pleasurable sensation similar to that of an exercise high), and Phenylethylamine ( often called the “love chemical” it is created within the brain and released when we are in love and acts as a mood elevator, anti-depressant, and helps increase focus and alertness), among others. Cacao contains over 300 different compounds – some of which are still being researched.

Cautions: Some antidepressants do NOT mix with the tryptophan and MAO (Monoamine Oxidase) Inhibitors in this cacao. Cacao can be fatal to dogs who genetically lack the enzyme to metabolize Theobromine, an ingredient. If you are sensitive, or this is your first time, try a half or 2/3 now and save the rest for a little later. You may want to add boiling water as at the cacao butter can thicken on the top. Drink water! Cacao is a great dehydrator and can bring on headaches if you do not hydrate. And enjoy!!
